I am not sure that our Faculty contract is public, so I will anecdotally summarize the 7 articles:
- Distance Learning is defined as “an instructional process that through the primary use of one or more of several modalities overcomes time and place boundaries that separate student and faculty member”.
- Teaching an online course is voluntary on the part of the instructor and requires approval of the Department Chair.
- All online instructors receive a stipend of $300 per semester that they are teaching. The intent of this stipend is to help with the cost of the internet service provider. The stipend is the same ($300) regardless of how many online courses the instructor teaches per semester.
- Prior to teaching an online course for the first time, full time faculty get a load reduction equivalent to one course in order to attend Online Course Instructor Training. The course is expected to be developed during this time. The same instructor also gets an additional load reduction the first semester they teach and online course.
Once an instructor has attended training, there is no additional compensation for additional online course development except under special approval by the Department Chair and Academic Vice President.
- This article covers a model for additional compensation for instructors who are teaching an overload of students. Although this article is still in the contract, it is not applicable because HVCC Department Chairs are adhering to not adding extra seats in order to keep online courses the same or less than on campus courses.
- This article has to do with not allowing the outsourcing of courses if not already offered on campus. This is really not applicable since this had never been an issue at HVCC.
- This article is a left over from when Interactive Television courses used to be taped as a backup. The tapes were supposed to not be used to replace an actual instructor. This is not applicable since this was never an issue and we no longer tape ITV classes except for emergencies.
Problem areas:
Nothing on ownership
Nothing on adjuncts related training expectations
Is very outdated and the only change seems to occur in article 3 since the stipend goes up and up each time the union negotiates
